Mipatient
Mipatient, a health technology innovator founded by CEO Manjit Mooker, is tackling the critical challenge of opioid use disorder. Recognising the need for better tools to support patients and clinicians, Manjit developed an initial demonstrator product. However, he quickly realised the landscape was shifting rapidly with the advent of accessible AI.
"I thought I knew what I was looking at, but the world had changed," Manjit recalls. His demonstrator wasn't quite market-ready, and it became clear that AI-led technology was essential to optimise the product, increase efficiency for healthcare providers, and improve patient outcomes. The specific goal emerged: to create a sophisticated conversational AI feature allowing intelligent interaction between patients and AI-driven clinical support agents.
The challenge was twofold: identifying the right AI approach and finding a trustworthy expert in a field suddenly crowded with consultants. "I probably didn't know who I could get honest advice from," Manjit admits. He needed more than a coder; he required a strategic partner with deep AI expertise who could genuinely understand the complex healthcare context and the business objectives. After being recommended by mentors, Manjit connected with Tom Liptrot at Ortom.
From the outset, Ortom demonstrated a commitment beyond typical service provision. Tom Liptrot didn't just focus on the technical specifications; he invested time to deeply understand Mipatient's mission and the nuances of the healthcare problem they aimed to solve. "He really got into the guts of what we were trying to do," Manjit notes. "He was asking questions that... most people in software or technology don't ask. For me, that made this relationship far more credible and instantly built trust."
Ortom acted as a strategic technology partner. The first step involved a thorough assessment to determine the most viable AI model (specifically, a Large Language Model or LLM) to achieve the desired conversational capabilities. Following this, Tom designed and developed a custom API engine. This engine serves as the intelligent core powering Mipatient's mobile application, enabling it to ask contextually relevant follow-up questions based on patient responses, simulating a guided clinical conversation.
Throughout the development, Tom's approach was collaborative and proactive. He didn't just execute instructions; he provided expert input, even suggesting alternative approaches to enhance user value. This confirmed Ortom's role as an invested partner focused on delivering the best possible outcome, not just fulfilling a contract. The moment Manjit saw the first demonstration of the working AI feature was pivotal: "I was kind of blown away... it just showed that something that once resided in my head as an idea was now fleshed out as a product."
"Tom took the time to understand what we were trying to achieve... He wasn't just building a bit of software. He really got into the guts of what we were trying to do... That for me made this relationship far more credible and instantly built trust."

"The 'aha' moment was seeing [Ortom's] understanding of what I was trying to achieve and, I would say, beautifully crafting a bit of technology which is being used today... it gave me a great sense of achievement."
